Club Meeting July 2

ROTARY CLUB MINUTES, Catonsville Sunrise – July 2, 2008

Jonathan Zawacki was greeter (breaking him in early)

Tom Medicus provided the inspiration.

Cal Oren presented a “Rotary moment” about Rotary’s role in eliminating polio

President George…I mean, Cal OREN, opened the meeting.

Guests included Kristen O’Farrell for Sherry Welch and the St. Agnes Foundation, Matt ?, a friend and neighbor of Eric Lamb’s (isn’t everyone?), who is CEO of Encore Health, and Charter Guest Alan

New Business:

  • Steve Arum discussed deadlines for the 5K Fitness run

  • Bruce VandverVort discussed Rotary dues (check is in the mail!)

Happy Dollars:

  • Brent Tolbert-Smith gave a dollar for the one step everyone can take to save money and save gas immediately, SLOW DOWN  Reports are that America would save 2 million barrels of oil a day (out of a current total of 20 million per day) if everyone drove at 60 m.p.h., which would quickly impact gas supply and pump price (and extend the mileage of each person’s own tank of gas).

  • Richard Hiteshew gave dollars in appreciation of the club’s appreciation of his service as Treasurer, as he symbolically transferred the cash box to Bruce VanderVort; also for Larry Aaronson’s unexcelled T-shirt sorter training at CCBC (known to locals as Catonsville Community College) and for his birthday gift of a Japanese Haiku poem.

  • Russ Witzke gave dollars in appreciation of Richard’s long-term service as Treasurer

  • Tom Medicus displayed a new T-shirt

  • George Brookhart gave dollars in appreciation of his meeting and picture with baseball great Brooks Robinson (was he a Yankee?)

  • Joe Loverde gave dollars for receiving his government stimulus check, for the 90 meals the Loverde Foundation is serving this week at the West Side shelter; for his first use on July 1 of his new Medicare card (Joe is so old?) and for recent fundraisers Friday and Saturday that raised about $1,000 each at the West Baltimore Methodist Church and the Buddy Keane reunion dance for the Foundation.

  • Ed Tolzman gave dollars for making the meeting in spite of a flat tire and for his trip on the Skyline Drive and the Kass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia.

  • Steve Arum gave dollars for his back recovery and readiness to resume his tennis

  • Karen Paris gave dollars for her daughter’s seminar at Princeton, a pleasurable visit to St. Michael’s, Md. And for the present of Bob Callahan of CCBC’s Sr. Institute.

Induction:  Jonathan Zawacki (sp?) was indicted (er, inducted), which we hope will be the start of a long, beautiful relationship.  Congratulations to all!

Speaker:  Bob Callahan, Director of the Senior Institute at CCBC  Bob has been Director of Aging and Coordinator of the Seniors Program at CCBC (Essex).

  • The Senior Institute offers courses for seniors (people who are 60+ - hmm, that could include a LOT or Rotarians) in general education, computers, physical education, arts and other subjects.

  • There are 18 Senior Centers served by CCBC Senior Institute courses.  The Institute will bring courses to any center in Baltimore County where seniors are found, offering some 700 courses per year.

  • 14,000 people register for Senior Center courses each year, at prices to the student ranging from $18 for 1 hour a week, 10 week course to $30 for a 2 hour per week course.

  • Funding is through the State of Maryland

50-50 Drawing: George Brookhart won the drawing.

The meeting was closed by President George…er CAL Oren

Club Meeting July 09

ROTARY CLUB MINUTES, Catonsville Sunrise – July 9, 2008

Susan Souder provided the inspiration.

Cal Oren presented a “Rotary moment” about Rotary’s role in eliminating polio

President Cal Oren, opened the meeting.

Guests included a St. Agnes Foundation representative standing in for Sherry Welch.

11 Members were present.

Old Business:

  • Bruce VanderVort as outgoing chair of the International Lane (are we still doing the bowling thing?) thanked Sam’s Club (a/k/a Bruce Siddons) for its sustained help on the Bani (Dominican Republic) project.

New Business:

  • Bruce Siddons discussed race sponsors and flyers concerning the September 5K Fitness Race.

  • Steve Arum, new head of the International Lane (maybe that’s a fast lane, instead of a bowling lane?), has received information on a Sister States program in Maryland that might be of interest.

  • Steve also noted that money for the Bani project had been received and school supplies would be gathered for the  upcoming July trip to Bani.

  • Cal Oren announced that the club board meeting would be held next Tuesday (July 15) at 8:00 a.m. (instead of 7:30, presumably at Café on the Grove?).

Happy Dollars:

  • Bruce Siddons gave dollars for the great help he received carrying the banner for Rotary (literally!) in the Arbutus and Catonsville 4th of July parades.

  • Richard Hiteshew gave dollars for his daughter Kathleen’s 24th birthday (ah, to be 24 again, instead of 27), his coming trip to Florida to see son Paul on Saturday, appreciation for Bruce Vandervort taking over as Treasurer and his fortuitous entry and egress at the Catonsville fireworks display last Friday night.

Speaker:  Michael Dorsey, head of MLD Communications, a motivational speaker and life coach, of Baltimore.  He was a collegiate speech champion who made a career of his interest and achievement in the field.

Mr. Dorsey emphasized the value of connecting with audiences with smiles, as well as words and eye contact.  He used the acronym SMILES to segue into tips for life that involved child’s play, imagination, use of mentors, dreams, evaluation and fulfillment in achieving useful life goals.

Following Mr. Dorsey’s talk, Brent Tolbert-Smith gave a belated Happy Dollar endorsing the value of mentors and the idea that the benefit flows both ways between the mentor and the mentoree (is that a word?).  Brent used the example of his experience with a wide range of Chinese, Korean and other Asian students he has met through Wan-Cheng’s and Brent’s informal U.S.-Asian Friendship Society.

Joe Loverde also enDorsed Mr. Dorsey’s message.

50-50 Drawing:  Bruce VanderVort won the drawing.

The meeting was closed by President Cal Oren

And a happy July to ALL!

Well, The Times makes mistakes and publishes corrections, so that should not be beneath me, too.  For all those who read not only minutes, but corrections to minutes, watch TV test patterns, etc., this is for you:

References in the Minutes for 7-10 meeting re club “lanes” was misleading, in that we have decided to dispense with the “lane” designation in favor of project chairs (like Steve as Chair of the Bani Project) until we have several hundred more members (actual ones, I can manufacture them on paper, but I believe he is talking about living breathing ones).  Also, I have no idea what the exact reference to Sister States was, but Bruce gave Steve a Sister State proclamation to take to Bani he got from a Sister State representative (remember we had a recent talk about the Secretary of State that involved such)  That’s all for now, until further scintillating developments emerge.  Moistly yours, the Scribbler, Brent

Board Meeting July 17

BOARD MEETING, ROTARY CLUB, CATONSVILLE SUNRISE, July 17, 2008

The meeting was opened by the President, Cal Oren.  In attendance, in addition to the President, were Bruce VanderVort, Treasurer and Brent Tolbert-Smith, Secretary.  Joe Loverde, Vice-President, was absent.

The Treasurer gave the financial report.  Basically, the club has taken in or deposited $1400 ($1472.00) and spent $900 in the past month ($964.50).  This report was supported with documentation of account activity (available from the Treasurer or Secretary).

The Treasurer reported that dues are due (so to speak) to the District in July.

The Board discussed the need for full club participation in the 5K Fitness race in September.  Many jobs are available, including recruiting runners and sponsors and help on race day.

The Board discussed plans to publish a newsletter of 1 to 2 pages for friends of Rotary coincident with the September 10 Visitors Day.

The District considers that the Club is responsible for issuing monthly membership reports to the District.  The Treasurer volunteered to accept this responsibility, accepting the thanks of the rest of the Board.

Amendment of the By-Laws was discussed.  The outgoing and incoming Secretaries reviewed the By-Laws recently over dinner and a bottle of Merlot (or was it Pinot Noir, I forget, but it was red and it was good).  After discussion, no great need to amend the by-laws was seen.

A task that remains is to make the same review of the by-laws of the Rotary Foundation.  Bruce discussed the probable need to elect Foundation officers different from the Club officers for IRS purposes.  The possibility of appointing annual Directors was also discussed, together with the possibility of making outgoing Club Officers officers of the Foundation.

The meeting was adjourned by the President.

Speaker:  Jean Allert, founder of American Woman and Board Chair of The Samaritan Women, spent 20 years as a high school English teacher, became a website consultant for non-profit organizations and is completing a Master’s in Divinity.

The Samaritan Women have recently acquired a large property, 23 acres, including a couple of large mansions, at 526 South Chapel Gate Lane, Baltimore, near Catonsville.  This property will be to provide a transitional residence for young women, aged 16 to 21, recovering from addiction, abuse or other life crises.  The faith-based program seeks young women coming from a treatment or stabilization program who are not yet ready to return to their homes and families.  The organization is applying for state grants and permits, soliciting clients and renovating its property and buildings.  It hopes to open as a non-profit organization in a year.  It is looking for support in the form of donations and service.  Volunteers are welcomed and tours invited.
